Level 3 offers $7.3 billion for tw telecom

Network services provider Level 3 Communications, Inc. (NYSE: LVLT) has reached an agreement to purchase business services provider tw telecom (NASDAQ: TWTC) for $7.3 billion in stock and cash and assumption of debt. The companies expect the deal to close in the fourth quarter of this year, subject to the usual regulatory reviews and shareholder approval.

NORDUnet upgrades Nordic research and education network via DANTE program with Ciena

The operators of the Nordic research and education network NORDUnet have selected the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform from Ciena Corp. (NASDAQ: CIEN) for a upgrade that will see 100G Optical Transport Network (OTN) switching added to the fiber-optic network. The upgrade is part of the Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe (DANTE) framework agreement’s project PRISM.

C Spire launches 1-Gbps FTTH network construction

C Spire said May 8 that it has launched construction of a planned statewide fiber-optic network that would support 1-Gbps fiber to the home (FTTH) connections in Mississippi. The service provider asserts the network will be the first in the U.S. to provide 1-Gbps FTTH services across an entire state.

KVH leverages Cyan SDN for etherXEN burstable Ethernet service

Japanese network service provider KVH Co., Ltd. says it will use the Blue Planet software-defined networking (SDN) capabilities of the Cyan (NYSE: CYNI) Z-Series metro packet-optical transport platform to enable dynamic bandwidth allocation capabilities as part of its new “etherXEN” Ethernet services suite. In addition to the bandwidth allocation capabilities, which will enable customers to “burst” to higher data rates when requirements warrant, the use of SDN will also enable KVH to turn up services faster than its competition and at reduced costs that KVH can pass to customers, sources at Cyan say.

Verizon details metro 100G deployments

Verizon (NYSE, NASDAQ: VZ) says it has begun to roll out 100-Gbps capabilities in its metro networks via systems from Fujitsu Network Communications and Tellabs. The service provider is using coherent transmission technology to support the 100-Gbps wavelengths to “gain the same benefits of increased capacity, superior latency and improved scalability in its metro network as it has from deploying 100G technology in its long-haul network,” the company said in a press release.

EMCORE unveils Medallion Series CATV amplifiers

EMCORE Corp. (NASDAQ: EMKR) has introduced the Medallion 7000 Series erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) for cable television (CATV) applications. These new EDFAs extend EMCORE's Medallion series rack-mount CATV transmitter portfolio; the company says the EDFAs feature the exceptionally low noise and superior output power stability demanded by CATV operators for modern hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) topologies and fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) networks.
