Thailand’s Interlink Telecom expands optical transport network with Alcatel-Lucent

Thailand broadband service provider Interlink Telecom is deploying the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS) from Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) in a major network build out, the systems house says. The fiber-optic network, deployed along railroad and road rights of way, will also connect to Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Malaysia.

Superior Essex launches DAS hybrid cable

Superior Essex Inc. had unveiled an indoor plenum fiber and copper hybrid cable for distributed antenna systems (DAS). The DAS hybrid cable consists of two discrete cables, one copper and one fiber, paired beneath an overjacket. This dual-cable design enables the hybrid cable to transmit communications while also providing power to DAS remote units.

ADTRAN targets gigabit MDU connections via FTTH, G.fast

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) has continued a run of broadband technology and deployment announcements with by releasing its near-term vision for gigabit services support for multiple-dwelling units (MDUs). The company says it will support both pure-play fiber to the living unit (FTTLU) via conventional fiber to the home (FTTH) approaches, as well as G.fast-enabled fiber to the building (FTTB).

Broadband binge drives 2Q14 aggregation equipment sales past $2 billion says Infonetics

Interest in GPON and VDSL2 vectoring and gigabit fiber to the home (FTTH) in North America pushed worldwide sales of broadband aggregation equipment to $2.1 billion in the second quarter of 2014, according to Infonetics Research. The market research firm reports in its upcoming 2Q14 "PON, FTTH, and DSL Aggregation Equipment and Subscribers" report due August 29 that broadband aggregation equipment sales grew 17% sequentially and 19% year-over-year.

Inphi to acquire Cortina Systems' optical transport semiconductor business

Inphi Corp. (NYSE: IPHI), a provider of high-speed, mixed signal semiconductors, and Cortina Systems, Inc., a communications semiconductor vendor, say they have entered into a definitive agreement under which Inphi will acquire Cortina's high-speed interconnect and optical transport product lines for $52.5 million in cash and $73.5 million in stock.

Orange to sign check for Sea-Me-We 5 submarine cable system

Orange says it will co-finance Sea-Me-We 5 (South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 5), a new submarine cable that will link France and Singapore. Plans call for Sea-Me-We 5 to connect Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Yemen, Djibouti, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Italy, and France.

Metro optical market worth $9 billion by 2018 says Dell'Oro

Metro optical transport equipment revenues are forecast to reach $9 billion by 2018, according to a newly released optical transport forecast report by market research firm Dell’Oro Group.  WDM equipment sales are expected to drive the majority of the metro optical market’s growth for the next five years and comprise the vast majority of revenue by 2018.
