Zayo to obtain FiberGate, get more dark fiber in D.C. metro

Louisville, Colo.-based Zayo Group is at it again with plans to acquire dark fiber services provider FiberGate. The acquisition of the Washington, D.C. metro area provider will add 130,000 fiber miles to Zayo's network in and around the city, along with 315 on-net buildings and two expansions to Frederick and Baltimore, Md.

The acquisition, funded from cash on hand and expected to close by the end of the 2012 third quarter, joins Zayo's previously announced agreement to acquire AboveNet. FiberGate has a laser focus: dark fiber in one geographic region that includes Baltimore, suburban Maryland, D.C. and northern Virginia.

"Government has long been our sweet spot but in recent years we have broadened our reach to carriers and enterprises," Bill Boyle, CEO and co-founder of FiberGate said in a news release.

That's exactly what Zayo was looking for, said Dan Caruso, CEO of the Zayo Group in a news release.

"The simplicity of FiberGate's business model, combined with its excellent inventory data, makes it a straightforward business to integrate," he said. "The combination of AboveNet's and FiberGate's networks will create an extensive fiber footprint in this strategic bandwidth corridor."
