New connector from 3M streamlines MDU installation
3M’s Communications Products Division has introduced a new multi-fiber pre-terminated option for its One Pass Fiber Pathway product aimed at fiber installation in multiple dwelling units (MDUs).
Advances in multi-fiber push-on (MPO) connectors, including significant improvements in performance and durability, led 3M to incorporate this type of connector into its Fiber Pathway product. A better pre-terminated option will provide service providers with faster, easier, and less costly deployment of fiber to multiple dwelling units (MDUs), the company claims.
The new connector type enables 6 or 12 fibers to be connected in one quick step and replaces large fiber distribution terminals (FDTs) on every floor with smaller wall boxes. Instead of terminating the One Pass duct at a large FDT designed to house 12, 24, or more discrete connections, the One Pass with MPO duct is terminated in a much smaller and less expensive wall box containing a single MPO adapter in the stairwell or access space at the end of each hallway, 3M explains. Riser-rated MPO to MPO jumpers are used to connect the cables to the fiber distribution hub (FDH) in the building basement.
The new 3M One Pass Fiber Pathway with MPO Connector also cuts materials costs by eliminating numerous FDTs, discrete adapters, and ribbon-to-SC connector fan-outs, and reduces installation costs beyond the 35% cost saving already achieved using the standard One Pass product set, the company adds.
