Crews increasing fiber through Clear Creek Canyon

Parts of U.S. 6 west of Denver will be closed on several days this month as crews install a fiber optic line through Clear Creek Canyon.

The Colorado Department of Transportation says the fiber will allow for cell phone coverage, plus electronic message signs with real-time highway information for drivers, closed-circuit cameras to relay traffic conditions, two-way radio services for emergency response, and a weather information-gathering system to help CDOT treat roads in bad weather.

Crown Castle International is installing the fiber along U.S. 6 between Golden and Interstate 70 and along Colorado 119, from U.S. 6 to near Black Hawk, for CDOT. Crown Castle will maintain it, but CDOT will own it.

CDOT says the arrangement will save the state about $7 million in installation costs.
