Calix makes headway in APAC with Symphonet customer win
The Malaysian communications provider Symphonet is employing Calix's (NYSE: CALX) E7-2 Ethernet Service Access Platform (ESAP) for its Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) broadband-service initiatives in Kuala Lumpur and Johore Bahru.
With its new point-to-point Ethernet fiber-based network in place, the service provider will deliver a suite of residential services, including IPTV and on-demand video, and up to 10 Gbps Ethernet data services to businesses.
To deliver the services, Symphonet will deploy Calix's 700GE optical network terminals (ONTs), including the 716GE-I indoor and 766GX business and mobile backhaul ONTs.
One of the reasons the service provider chose Calix was its modularity and ability to support various fiber and copper-based technologies, including point-to-point fiber-based Ethernet and VDSL2 in 1 RU form factor. This enables Symphonet to up its bandwidth and service capabilities without the need for major network expansion.
Symphonet CEO Dato' Baharum Salleh said Calix brought to the table a product that "ideally fits our business model in terms of building our subscriber base and we are delighted that this will be a highly reliable, flexible, and manageable solution."
The deal with Symphonet helps Calix establish a foothold in the competitive APAC broadband equipment, one that's been traditionally dominated by the likes of Alcatel-Lucent (NYSE: ALU), Ericsson (Nasdaq: ERIC), Huawei, and ZTE (Shenzhen: 000063.SZ).
With much of its customer base being domestic independent and larger incumbent service providers, it delivered its product to the service provider via reseller partner Palette Multimedia.
