India's BTL lightens FTTH network service in Mauritius

India's Bharat Telecom Ltd (BTL) is moving ahead with its $30 million Fiber to the Home (FTTH) network plan that will connect 50,000 homes and businesses in Mauritius.

In addition to delivering services directly to customers themselves, the Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (GEPON)-based network will provide wholesale connectivity to gaming and WebTV providers.

With the intention to "connect every home and office in the country with a fibre network," the service provider said it has been building the network since 2011 and will soon start connecting homes and businesses to its 100 Mbps fiber cables.

Despite the potential speed that can be delivered over a GEPON network, BTL will initially only offer a 2 Mbps connection bundled with 40 IPTV channels.
