Kabel Deutschland taps ADVA Optical Networking for nationwide fiber-optic network

German cable MSO Kabel Deutschland will use 100-Gbps coherent optical transport technology and reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs) from ADVA Optical Networking in a new nationwide fiber-optic network.

The network, which includes a fully meshed backbone, will comprise 26 major nodes and more than 50 intermediate sites. ADVA’s FSP 3000 directionless, multi-degree ROADMs will provide the key building blocks for the network, which will include spans as long as 1000 km.

“After a thorough selection process, it became clear which company was the right fit for us,” said Frank Hellemink, vice president network engineering Kabel Deutschland. “From the innovative technology to the excellent performance of the 100G pilot link trial between Hamburg and Berlin, ADVA Optical Networking has proven to be the right choice. This future-proof solution is cost-effective and allows for fully automated remote configuration supported by a rich service management implementation. We are very satisfied with the end product.”

The fully automated capabilities of the network are significant new features that reduce operational costs, planning requirements, and lead times, ADVA asserts.

“It minimizes time-to-revenue and significantly lowers opportunity costs,” said Hartmut Müller-Leitloff, vice president sales, Central Europe, ADVA Optical Networking. “Service providers recognize the need to build a core that enables them to seize new business opportunities while radically lowering operating expenses. There are three clear building blocks at play here: ROADM technology, a control plane, and 100G transmission technologies. Once these are in place, you have an automated network that not only provisions new services, but also monitors your entire network.”
